The traditional Siamese (Thai)

The History:
The Siamese is a century old breed that originates from Siam (now Thailand). The current Siamese doesn't look much like these cats any more. The old Siamese or Traditional Siamese is now called the Thai. Late in the 18th century the first representatives of the breed came to England. The Thai can vary in build, but is much more robust than the modern Siamese. Still it is clearly an Oriental cat with a moderate wedge shaped head and a somewhat longer body.

The character:
The Traditional Siamese is a very intelligent and talkative cat. The cat is people orientated, demands enough attention and can show affection in a fierce manor. Many cats retrieve with pleasure and like to join you on trips. The cat looks straight into your eyes and seems to be able to read your mind. They are playful and active and remain so into old age. Yet they aren't hyperactive and they are quite calm in between playtimes. With little children they are tolerant and patient. It is a strong and healthy breed that can easily reach the age of 15 years or more.

The appearance:
The Traditional Siamese is a medium size cat with a robust, but elegant appearance. The legs are muscled. The tail is of medium length, broad at the base and towards the end more narrow. The head is firm of medium length and width. Plump cheeks give the head a rounder appearance. The cat is well muscled, but not too extreme. The eye colour is radiant blue. The upper curve of the eyes are almond shaped, the lower curve is nicely round. The fur is smooth, feels soft and springy, under-wool is not desired. The mask, the ears, the legs and the tail must be of the same colour and colour intensity.

The Abyssinian

History:
The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds. By the end of the 18th century the first representatives of the breed came to England. At some time the British Shorthair was used to improve the breed. Several decades later the Abyssinian came to The Netherlands.

The character:
The Abyssinian is a friendly, intelligent cat with a definite own character. They are active and need a lot of attention. If they are left alone to much, they pine away. They are real members of the family. They get along fairly well with other cats, but can be friends with dogs as well. They are known for their curiosity and cleverness. They are playful and when they are tired after playing, they can lay on your lap for hours to be cuddled.

The appearance:
The Abyssinian is a muscled, firm, elegant and pliant cat. The legs are slender with a fine bone-structure. The feet are small and oval. The tail is rather long, broad at the base and ending in a point. The head is wedge shaped and has tabby marking. The eyes are large and placed wide apart. The fur is ticked (two or three bands of colour per hair).

The American Shorthair

History:
The American Shorthair originates from farm cats (probably introduced by explorers and pioneers). The cat worked catching mice and eventually was used by the American Post to protect the mailbags against gnawing pests. By selecting for beauty in the end breeding resulted in the American Shorthair.

The character:
The character of the American Shorthair is much like the European Shorthair, which means that it's quite divers. They do have in common that they are playful and remain so in to old age. The cat needs space. If the cat can't go outside, it is advised to buy a large scratching-pole. The cats are intelligent, curious, active and cheeky. They get along well with cats and other animals.

The appearance:
The American Shorthair has a medium to large body and is firmly build. The legs are muscled and of medium length. They have a heavy bone-structure. The feet are powerful, large and round. The head is round, a bit longer that wide and has round cheeks. The tail is of medium length. Broad at the base and tapering in to a round tip. The eyes are round, placed far apart and have an alert and bright expression.
