ADVENTURES > GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE

The kittens were growing very well and before I knew it, I could hardly see the difference between the kittens and their mum. Had they first conquered the first floor step by step, now they were about to conquer the rest of the house.

In the living room door there are two cat flaps. All too soon they learned from the other cats how they worked (in theory at least). The problem was how to put the theory into practice and that wasn't easy. It appeared to take quite some force and weight (read: ponderous behavior) to get through the flap into the hall. The more ponderous the kitten, the faster it got through.

After being out on adventure on the other side of the door, they wanted to get back into the living room. That too wasn't easy. The biggest problem proved to be the door itself. They had to get through the thickness of the door, before reaching the flap. Not that the doors here are meters thick, but that didn't make it any easier. So they had to adjust their newly learned techniques. After several attempts they mastered it. Thus one wasn't safe anywhere anymore, for the little rascals now moved through the whole house.

At the age of 13 weeks they were ready for a big adventure: the Neocat cat show in Nijmegen. Mum Phèdre and grandma Mirre would join them. In the morning we were nicely on time to check in and to steam on to get in line for the veterinary inspections. It took a fair bit of time, but luckily all were approved of and thus we could go to the hall and our cages.

The five little ones were judged first as a litter. The judge found it very difficult. She started with the boys. After a lot of looking, turning, touching and looking again she had to make a choice. She choose Curro to be the best, Casimiro became second and Carlos became third. Then is was the girls turn. Although there were only two of them, the choosing proved to be even more difficult. After careful consideration she choose Charo to be the best and Carmen became second. I was pleased with the result. Charo would remain with me in the cattery after all.

Then came the individual judgings. Charo was first, followed by Phèdre, then Carmen and finally Mirre. We walked in and out, for one was after the other. Then began the great waiting. That was convenient, for some guests had arrived. They were very interested in the boys and now I had plenty of time for them.

In the early afternoon it was announced that it was time for the presentation of a range of prices for the Burmese. The tension within me rose rapidly. I was invited to come to the podium with Mirre, for she had won the BIV for Burmese/ Bombay (torties and bombay). While I took her out of the cage, I was again invited to the podium, now with Charo. She had won the BIV for Burmese (uniform coloured). In addition to that, she had also won the special price for Best Burmese/Bombay Kitten. My heart began to beat faster and faster and my hands began to tremble. Luckily there were enough helping hands around. As if all this wasn't enough, I was again invited to the podium. This time with the whole litter, because they had become Best Litter Short hair.

What ever happened after that I really don't know. I was just walking around with radiated joy. I was so immensely proud of the kittens and that rain of prices was simply outrageous. It was a beautiful crown on all the work and a fantastic conclusion of an eventful period. Although the day was far from over, for me it flew by. Before I knew it, it was time to pack up and go home.

In the weeks that followed first Carmen left, soon followed by Curro. Several weeks later Casimiro and Carlos left too. Charo, my last kitten, stayed behind. The peace returned. For next year we've already made plans, but until then we'll enjoy the peace and quiet.
